Automotive Elite Finishings EN process can reach Level 10 approvals for over-72-hr CASS testing on duplex nickel/ chrome-plated aluminum parts. Elites Electroless Nickel Process Surpasses 72-Hr CASS Requirements Elite Finishing process also increases yields by more than 20 percent. M ilwaukees Elite Finishing says it has come up with a unique electroless nickel process to achieve Level 10 approvals for over-72-hour CASS testing on duplex nickel/chrome-plated aluminum parts, which it says far exceeds one customers requirements by 327 percent. These parts went on to go to 144 hours before the first signs of failure, a Level 9 rating in protection and appearance, Jaime Maliszewski, president and CEO, says. While the process is proprietary, the results are included in a report from Scientific Control Labs, one of the nations top testing facilities, which confirmed that Elite Finishing passed the aggressive CASS testing procedure until the 144-hr checkpoint. This is amazing considering that Harley-Davidson only requires a 22-hr test to approve parts, Maliszewski says. He adds that, not only did the finish pass this aggressive corrosion test in all critical areas, it also passed in areas ASTM specification eliminates from testing due to the difficulty of plating into recessed areas that a 3/4-inch diameter ball can not touch. According to Maliszewski, Elite Finishing, a subsidiary of Reliable Plating Works, recently took a job that another supplier was running at 70-percent yields due to casting issues and raised it up to 92-percent yields, saving their customer more than $750,000 a year. It allowed them to get off overtime because they needed fewer parts to meet their order requirements, Maliszewski says. It also allowed them to bring the outsourced processes back in-house since they now had excess capacity, and they went out and filled this excess capacity with new work. For information on Elite Finishing, please contact Maliszewski at 414-4899710 or email jaimem@elitefinishing.net. n 16 JANUARY 2013 immersion time in Meta-Black EN along with a clean, active deposit prior to blackening can aid in developing a consistent, black deposit, Beavers says. The entire heat-shield-parts project was a testament to John Cutchins years of experience and know-how. The customer used the heat shield to cool down fiberglass strands as they emerged from a formulation process. When the customer mentioned to Cutchin that the heat shields worked best after a few hours and days of use, when they would turn black from the heat source, Cutchin recommended the blacken electroless nickel process to get the desired result from the beginning. Walking around the Palmetto Plating shop and strolling through its parts staging area reveals the story of how the company got to where it is today and where it is headed when Hunter takes over for his father, John. Large, irregularly bent pipes from the first nuclear energy plant to be built in the U.S. in 30 years await coatings on Palmettos loading dock. Large, oversized vessels are getting a coating in the Palmetto rubber room, an outdoor plating facility layered with rubber walls that Cutchin built several years ago to handle projects with odd sizes and shapes. A lot of what we do is thinking outside the box, Cutchin says. To that end, we are constantly looking for new ways to better serve our customers by improving efficiency and investing in new technology. n For more information on Palmetto Plating, please call 864-859-9314 or visit Palmettoplating.com.
