Starting with this year's liquid and powder coating edition, those shops taking part in the Products Finishing Top Shops Benchmarking Survey will receive a customized report illustrating how their responses compare to those of their industry peers. This will be in addition to the other Top Shops reports that have been provided to participating shops in the past. The customized reports focus on selected survey responses; for each participant, they illustrate how his or her facility compares to all shops and to "Top Shops"—those whose total survey scores placed them at the top of all scores. These customized reports will help shops recognize both their strengths and areas for opportunity. The reports were compiled with the help of Gardner Business Intelligence (GBI), which is part of Gardner Business Media, the parent company of Products Finishing. "The strategy behind the customized reports is to help each shop find ways to fairly evaluate how it performed against its peers, and to indicate what percentile the shop placed in for that particular question," says Michael Guckes, chief economist for GBI. "It is helpful for shops to see where they stood in each particular question, so they can understand their relative strength and opportunities." In previous years, the two detailed reports that shops were given—the Executive Summary and the report by plant size—were not something that they could necessarily take back and make actionable in their operations, or apply in a way that could impact their future success. "By including customized reports for several impor- tant indicators, shops can now see where to focus their attention to improve their overall performance," says Jan Schafer, GBI's senior manager. "Showing a shop which percentile they fall in for a given question gives greater context to initiate overall continuous improvement programs." The annual survey was designed so finishing busi- nesses can identify optimal shopf loor practices, as well as to help them improve operational and business approaches that define what would be considered a "world-class" finishing operation. The results from the several hundred shops that took part in the survey this spring was an incredible compilation of data, leading to best practices and operational strategies that clearly define a "Top Shop" as well as "the rest of the field." The Top Shops Executive Summary that participating shops will continue to receive in addition to the custom reports will include data and statistics that will allow them to formulate a plan for improvements in finishing technology, performance and practices, business strategy, and human resources. The third report breaks out results by size of plant. The 2018 electroplating survey will begin December 1. "By including customized reports for several important indicators, shops can now see where to focus their attention to improve their overall performance."
