8 OCTOBER 2017 — PFonline.com Axalta Acquires Plascoat Systems Axalta Coating Systems has acquired Plascoat Systems Limited, a leading supplier of thermoplastic powder coatings, from International Process Technologies (IPT). Financial terms were not disclosed. Founded in 1952, Plas- coat was a pioneer in the formulation, manufacturing and application of thermo- plastic polyolefin coatings. Plascoat's product portfolio includes Plascoat PPA 571, used for a wide variety of outdoor applications; Talis- man, used extensively in Liquid Paint Maker Developing Graphene-based Coatings A European-based liquid paint maker is developing graphene- containing coatings that provide corrosion protection for a variety of industries. Graphene was discovered at the Universi- ty of Manchester in 2004, and HMG Paints in Manchester, Eng- land, is working with Applied Graphene Materials (AGM) on the project. HMG says it is primed to revolution- ize the materials industries in the commercial vehicle and construction equipment markets. "We're delighted with how our initial testing has gone and have now progressed to life trials in the environ- ments they'd ultimately be used in" says Jonathan Falder, head technician. "We've found AGM's graphene disper- sions to integrate well using conven- tional processes and have seen some significant performance gains from our own testing of commercial products. We are moving onto full-scale trials and commercial launch, as we believe that these benefits can add real value to our customers." In 2004, two researchers at the University of Manchester, professors Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, discovered graphene and won the Nobel Prize in physics for their pioneering work. According to the university, graphene is unique in that it is ultra-light yet immensely tough—200 times stronger than steel—but it also is incredibly flex- ible, is the thinnest material pos- sible and is transparent. It also is a superb conductor and can act as a perfect barrier; not even helium can pass through it, the university says. HMG Paints is a family-owned business and the UK's largest independent paint manufacturer. AGM's strategy is to target com- mercial application in three core markets: coatings, composites and polymers, and functional fluids. Visit short.PFonline.com/top_shops .
