I N N O VAT I O N S 48 JANUARY 2016 — pfonline.com PPG's Environmentally Safe Cleaner Eliminates Rust and Mill Scale PPG's Corrokleen 44 rust remover is an application-friendly citric-acid-based gel cleaner designed to remove rust and mill scale. This cleaner is safer for both users and the envi- ronment than traditional grinding, sanding, media blasting or chemical-based solutions, the company says. Formulated without phosphates and other strong acids, this rust remover features a shear-thinning gel structure for easy spray application and a low-shear thixotropy that adheres the product to surfaces on which it is applied. This product is engineered for application on rusted or mill- scaled hot-rolled steel or rusted cold-rolled steel. The company says its remover efectively eradicates me- tallic oxides, heat scale and heat-treated stains and is useful for the removal of blush/fash rust from previously blasted surfaces. The detergency and low surface tension provide electroplated copper adhe- sion, and void-free coverage. This cleaner is designed as a drop-in replacement process for conventional vertical copper electroplating applications with minimal copper etching and and does not attack or damage dry flm resists. Under develop- ment since 2011, the new process was initially designed for high-output GTDI engines currently in production by two U.S. domestic automak- ers. This coating was developed to help meet requirements for new production engines planned for 2018–2020, which call for less cylinder-bore friction and the use of lower-viscosity oils and alternative fuels. The MSC312 is designed to improve upon the scuf-and-wear capabilities of its MSC385 coating because of its chromium nitride composition. MSC312 uses chromium nitride in top ring coatings applied through a high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) method. Mahle says MSC312 improves wear by up to 25 percent and provides improved scuff resistance. The thickness of the new coating also can be adjusted to meet engine durability requirements. Mahle says its new coating is the frst thermally applied piston ring coating to use chromium nitride in its formulation. The addition of molybdenum-chrome provides enhance- ments to pure CrN.
