In-Person Electroplating and Surface Finishing Course (CEF) Nov. 16 – 19, 2015 As the staple course of the AESF Foundation education program, this course will provide the student with a broad range of information related to the fundamentals of electroplating, methods of preparing parts for surface fnishing and an understanding of a wide variety of electro- plating and other fnishing processes. Passing the exam for this course earns the test-taker their Certifed Electroplater Finisher (CEF) credential and is a requirement to obtain Master Surface Finisher (MSF) certifcation. NASF Management Conference Feb. 28 – March 3, 2016 Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort Rio Grande, Puerto Rico Washington Forum April 19 – 21, 2016 Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City Washington D.C. Sur/Fin Manufacturing & Technology Trade Show & Conference June 6–8, 2016 South Point Hotel and Convention Center Las Vegas Sur/Fin Trends Show Companies Eyeing Future Engineering, technology, industrial and management profes- sionals throughout the surface fnishing industry have taken an early lead in reserving exhibit space for the 2016 conference and trade show to be held in Las Vegas this coming June. NASF ofi- cials have announced that exhibit space is 90 percent sold out. Regardless of their particular fnishing and development objec- tives, Sur/Fin has helped companies achieve proftable growth. The event's strength in the past several years has been its position to deliver quality content and an engaged industry community to attendees. This ensures exhibitors a quality audience and a higher return for their investment. NASF Invests in Next Generation Surface Finishers NASF California Chapters have oficially launched the 2015 Fall Bright Design Challenge with students from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Throughout the fall, 20 students will take part in this intense program of learning the key perfor- mance drivers of quality, cost, and environmental compliance throughout the surface fnishing process. This semester's program began with a tour of K & L Anodizing and an introductory course covering "Plating 101" presented by oficials from General Plating Co. These tours and training sessions are an integral part of the Bright Design program. The fnal judging results for the California Bright Design Challenge will be announced in December. "dripping with chrome." Most applications involved steel and die-cast parts, but other materials challenges were emerging. In particular, the need to lower the weight of vehicles brought increased use of plastics, and processes were developed to provide adherent metal layers on them, most prominently ABS. Along with them came the need for tests to assure that the metal reliably adhered to the plastic parts. Among these was the Jacquet peel test, which measured the force required to peel the plate from the plastic. Dr. Edward Saubestre, of Enthone, was thought by many to be the "father of electroplated plastics." This renowned scientist and his co-workers published a comprehensive study of the Jacquet peel test and earned the Gold Medal award for the best paper for 1965. They reported that, although a valid test, it is subject to widespread misapplication due to lack of under- standing of the fundamentals involved. Practical implications for commercial plated plastics were discussed. Although lengthy, this valuable treatise remains of seminal importance. The full paper can be accessed and printed at short. pfonline.com/NASF15Nov2 . Now in its sixth year of sponsoring this program, NASF West Coast NASF Chapters and the national association are committed to a strong program with the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. This efort and its partner program in Detroit with the College for Creative Studies is part of the NASF's Surface Technology Initiative to proactively promote the surface fnishing industry. NASF Scholarship Deadline Quickly Approaching From mechanical, environmental, or industrial engineering, the surface technology industry is diverse, encompassing several disciplines. And like most sectors in manufacturing, it is consid- ered a critical need feld. NASF scholarship program is designed to encourage students interested in this feld and welcomes students to apply for this ofering for tuition assistance. The NASF Scholarship application deadlines for scholarships for college juniors, seniors and graduate students is December 9, 2015. Awards will be given for the 2015-2016 academic year. Scholarship information for prospective applicants for under- graduate and graduate students may be obtained by visiting nasf.org website. Completed applications are due December 9th.
