Robotic System Completes Color Change While Painting Used in conjunc- tion with ABB's IRB 5500 paint robot, the Compact CBS II is the second generation of its robotic Cartridge Bell Paint System designed for internal- charge waterborne painting. It is fully integrated with the robot controller and can complete color changes in tandem with the painting process. The lighter, faster and more eficient design is more closely integrated with the system's components, and it can reduce color-change time by as much as 50 percent over other solutions, the company says. Servomotor drive units have been added for vertical and horizontal cartridge-handling motion, enabling precise angular positioning and process control. The new drives can be integrated into existing installations. The CBS II also has been outftted with dual dosing control units (DCUs), one that precisely doses the paint from the cartridge and one that ac- curately measures the flling of the next cartridge. The second DCU eliminates the need for a fow meter due to its positive displacement characteristics.
