NEW PRODUCTS PRODUCTS FINISHING — pfonline.com 43 According to White, the system ofers safety and perfor- mance advantages over the traditional method of wiping iron oxide stains with a pickling paste, because the paste's hydrofuoric and nitric acid components make it inherently hazardous. Ensitech has invested heavily in research to create a range of fluids for virtually every aspect of stainless steel surface preparation, weld cleaning and finishing. The TB- 21 and TB-25 stainless steel weld cleaning solutions are produced using analytical-grade orthophosphoric com- pounds and incorporate surfactants and sequestrants to encapsulate the iron oxide, restoring the chromium-rich passive layer that gives stainless steel its inherent anti- corrosive properties. Dan James, an engineering specialist with Key Technology in Walla Walla, Washington, has been using the TIG Brush for some time and likes the results. He says his company does a lot of etching and tested the machine by adapting a head and using an etching chemical it had on hand. The TIG brush took 2 minutes to etch, compared to 15 minutes on the ma- chine the company used previously. "A feature we like is that it does not scratch the surface and gets into corners easily," James says. "Another savings is in the cleaner; the other machine had a pump applicator and used a lot of cleaner. Dipping the brush is a better solu- tion and reduces waste." Jon Kilgore is on the staf at the University of Minnesota CSE Machine Shop, which designs, fabricates, welds and re- pairs prototype and scientifc research equipment. The shop won a TIG Brush at a Fabtech rafle and loves the product. "We tested other rigid 'wand- style' cleaners as well as the pickling paste and found problems with each method," Kilgore says. "But we have been using the TIG Brush, and everyone likes the results." For more information, visit tigbrush.com or call the company's Aurora, Illinois, ofices at 630-851-2126. Controllers Boost Business for Aerospace Component Processor The fexibility and profling power of West Control Solutions' CAL 9500P temperature controller has provided an exception- ally powerful solution for Active Magnetic Inspection (AMI) of Sun Valley, California, a company that treats and inspects fasteners for the aerospace industry. AMI performs plating, stripping, stress relief and magnetic particle inspection. In the aerospace industry, manufacturing precision is key, and a business such as AMI depends on meeting quality-control requirements. In order to achieve this, a precise level of process control and accurate record-keeping is required. AMI decided to raise the bar and establish a process sys- tem that would earn accreditation from Nadcap and thus enable the company to strengthen its position in the aerospace fastener business. To meet this need, its systems were enhanced by the temperature controllers. AMI enlisted the services of R.J. "Skip" Schaefer of Titan Industrial Heating Systems, an expert in the design and con- struction of temperature-controlled manufacturing processes. Schaefer's task was challenging, as many points of control were required, including two stress-relief ovens that each required monitoring of 60 product containers. In order to achieve Nadcap accreditation, the company needed to establish a thorough quality system with well- documented process instructions and complete records for all production lots, including time and temperature data, to meet the needs of the annual audit. "The customer needed to provide 100-percent traceability on its output," Schaefer says. "I've been using CAL temperature controllers for around 25 years, and I can count the number of failures on one hand, so it had to be CAL." The CAL 9500P was chosen as the front end for its fexibility and profling power. In order to satisfy Nadcap process data re- quirements, all of the instruments are tied to a central PC that runs CALGrafx process monitoring sofware. The result is that every point is monitored and stored, minute by minute. According to the company, when the process system was inspected by Nadcap, the results were outstanding, and AMI was issued its certifcate, enabling the company to strengthen its position in the aerospace fastener business. "There have been zero faws in the system," Schaefer says. "That's with two ovens: one with 36 controls and one with 34, both working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A system such as this requires absolute reliability, and CAL controllers have guaranteed that." For more information, visit west-cs.co.uk. Ceramic-Covered Roller Suited for Corona Treating American Roller's Arcotron CL800 is a ceramic-covered roller designed for conventional corona treating and applications in harsh environments, such as skip and lane treating. According to the company, the roller's dielectric coating is nearly three times higher than the typical voltage at the electrode, enabling continu- ous operation at 300°F without degradation, which results in extended service life. The durable corona treater cover features stable, long-term electrical properties, and ofers improved cut and abrasion resistance. It can produce a variety of coating thicknesses and tight-tolerance fnishes with roughness as low as 15 Ra.
