Australian-based Ensitech's TIG Brush for cleaning stainless steel welds made its U.S. debut at Fabtech last winter, and visitors there witnessed live demos of the process designed to be a quicker and higher-quality alternative to their current weld-treatment methods. Inventor and company owner Clive White says the "TIG Brush efect," as it has become known, describes the wide- eyed look of frst-time observers as they view the system's weld cleaning and passivation capabilities. Essential to these capabilities is the system's proprietary electro-chemical process, which combines low-toxicity fuids with a patented power supply and brush design, and serves to protect the weld to the extent that the corrosion rate is reduced to less than that of unwelded stainless steel. "It provides one-step cleaning and passivation, requires little user training, and gives welders complete control over the surface fnishing of their work," White says. He invented the system in his garage in Australia afer a friend who had won a manufacturing contract from McDonald's Corp. asked him to come up with a way to clean welds. The Ensitech Stainless Steel Surface Finishing System pro- vides welders a choice of four cleaning fuids, plus dedicated fuids ranging from pre-weld preparation to fnishing and marking, covering fabricators and fnishers at every step of the welding process. White says the product is already being used by several industry-leading companies, including Nestle, Bechtel and Thales Group, and adds that the TIG Brush has been rapidly adopted as the preferred weld-cleaning tech- nology of companies in the food and beverage, oil and gas, defense, chemical and mining, water treatment, energy, and construction industries across the globe. TIG Brush machines are available in most markets in a choice of three models, each with diferent power levels, features and characteristics. The TIG Brush uses an electro-chemical process for weld cleaning and passivation. The TIG Brush comes in three standard models. Inorganic Zinc-Rich Coating Protects Steel According to Sherwin-Williams, coatings with high loadings of zinc dust are dificult to apply on steel and can take too long to dry. Coatings with a lower zinc load can dry quickly and also al- low for a smoother fnish, however, decreased zinc dust can raise performance concerns such as inadequate corrosion protection. With 76 percent zinc dust in the dry flm, Sherwin-Williams' Zinc Clad II Plus FG is a "feld-grade" inorganic, zinc-rich coating for steel that is said to be fast drying and to perform comparably to other inorganic zinc coatings with higher zinc loadings. It also ofers a more uniform fnish, faster dry-to-handle time and a longer pot life than competitors, the company says. In addition, it features a volatile organic compound level of less than 340 g/L and meets a Class B slip rating. For use over prepared blasted steel, the coating self-heals to resume protection if damaged in the feld and also provides sacrifcial protection by the same mechanism as galvanizing, forming an inorganic barrier to moisture and harsh solvents that may cause damage to the substrate. Zinc Clad II Plus FG can be applied as a one-coat maintenance coating or as a permanent primer for steel substrates in severe corrosive environments.
