These were followed by red, blue, natural hues and green. ÒWhile white continues to be the most dominant choice in car color, we see growth in the variety of whites being ofered to consumers,Ó says Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager, color styling, automotive OEM coatings. ÒCar manufacturers are seeking ways to create variations of white, silver, black and gray that are specifc to their brands and that complement diferent vehicle types. Distinct efects such as micas, glass fakes, fne bright aluminum and hue-shifing pigments help them achieve this." Looking ahead, Harrington says drivers may see more blue in 2014 models. ÒIt can be light and silver, dark and rich, very chromatic—all those might look very good on diferent vehicle styles.Ó PPGÕs data has shown increases in the popularity of blue for certain regions and vehicle types, such as an increase in North America this year and more than double the popularity in sport models here between 2011 and 2013. Other colors trending? Gold and beige in the minivan segment, red and blue for SUVs, and gray in the luxury market. Luxury vehicles, 57 percent of which were gray in 2013, are most likely to feature efect fnishes in black metallic and white pearl. ÒI was a little bit surprised by the gray in the luxury market," says Harrington. "But if you are ofering multiple grays, it will boost that number. Gray is the new black for the luxury market.Ó In response to the continued demand for color innovation in automotive coatings, PPG has introduced its ÒColorographyÓ collection featuring fve distinct palettes and more than 60 exterior shades for manufacturers to consider in styling 20162017 model year vehicles.
