NASF REPORT individuals ready to be trained will be linked to a qualifed foundation instructor who will teach a curriculum tailored to the operation's specifc needs. Choose between any of the modules from all 12 courses. The list of modules is found on pages 4 – 5 of the Course Catalog. Companies can submit selections by email to lzorich@nasf.org, or call 202-457-8401 to get started on custom training. NASF Economic "Snapshot" – Strong Upward Trend for Production By Dr. Ken Mayland, Clearview Economics 1. The numbers. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported that its summary Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose 0.2 points, for an October reading of 56.4. According to the ISM, a reading above 50 would typically be associated with an expansion of the manufacturing sector. October saw the ffh straight accelerated rise of the PMI. Furthermore, based on the ISM's estimates, if the current reading of 56.4 were sustained, it would tend to be consistent with 4.4% real GDP growth (annualized). NASF TECHNICAL PAPERs Edited by James Lindsay, NASF Technical Editor Alloy Plating by Heating Stacked Single Layers and the Possibility of its Application in the Future— The 51st William Blum Memorial Lecture (2012) By Professor H. Kanematsu, Ph.D., Suzuka National College of Technology Since its inception in 1958 under the auspices of the AES, the NASF Scientifc Achievement Award has been given annually to a person who has contributed to the advancement of the theory and practice of electroplating, metal fnishing and the allied arts; has raised the quality of the profession; or has been involved in a combination of these. In 2012, the award was given to Hideyuki Kanematsu, a professor in the Department of Material Science and Engineering at Suzuka National College of Technology in Suzuka, Japan. Over the years, his research interests have been focused on the production of alloy coatings by the interdifusion of single metals, as well as on the interfacial phenomena between metallic surfaces and organisms from an environmental standpoint. He has authored or co-authored numerous papers and has been a regular contributor to the technical program at Sur/Fin conferences. Dr. Kanematsu's lecture, presented at NASF Sur/Fin 2013, was a review of his research over the years. Alloy plating continues to have potential for practical application. Conventionally, it can produce unique properties that cannot otherwise be realized with any single element flm. Recent trends need 14 DECEMBER 2013 — pfonline.com 2. Two for two. Orders (60.6, up 0.1 points) and production (60.8, down 1.8 points) continue to run at very strong rates of increase. (Don't forget, levels above or below 50 indicate direction of change, so any reading around 60 suggests a high preponderance of frms indicating "increases," and from that, one might infer that in the aggregate, manufacturing's rate of increase is strong.) This is exactly where you like to see the strength concentrated. Our "inventory dynamic" indicator has been in a positive confguration for three consecutive readings (afer being negative for 17 consecutive months. 3. With a twist! Even exports (57.0, up 5.0 points) appear to be doing well. Imports (55.5, up 0.5 points) are arriving onshore at a pretty good clip, too. This is consistent with, and in support of, solid domestic demands. 4. You're biased! Notice the bias on prices? Price Index = 55.5, down 1.0 points. Despite all you hear about infation, that there isn't any, the purchasing managers are saying that prices are creeping higher. 5. Toll. If there were any toll on factories coming out of the partial government shutdown, it appeared to be in the form of tempered demands for new employees. The ISM Employment Index for October = 53.2, down 2.2 points. more innovative developments to solve the practical problems through the utilization of alloy flms. Dr. Kanematsu has proposed a unique method of alloy coating through the combination of multiple plating and subsequent heat treatment. In this lecture, he shows the results and the possibilities for using this technology in the future. The full paper can be accessed and printed from short.pfonline. com/NASF13Dec1. Electroplated Tin-Nickel Coatings as a Replacement for Nickel to Eliminate Nickel Dermatitis By P. Møller, Technical University of Denmark; J.B. Rasmussen and S. Köhler, Elplatek, A/S; and L.P. Nielsen, Danish Technological Institute Nickel dermatitis (skin allergy) is a growing problem in numerous countries and is one of the most common types of contact allergic dermatitis. In many countries, electroplated nickel coatings have been banned in applications that lead to direct and prolonged skin contact. This is also the case when a nickel substrate or a nickel-plated surface is coated with a protective layer of another metal such as chromium, gold or silver, or a thin, organic coating/paint, because even small pinholes, scratches or other defects in the protective layer
