Next Steps Among the next steps in the RMO process will be to continue answering ANSES' technical questions and to fill in the remaining data gaps for two key substances (nickel oxide and nickel sulphate) that have been formally selected for an RMO analysis in 2013. Depending on the outcome of the exercise, the remaining nickel-containing chemicals listed in the introduction could also be reviewed by the ANSES in 2014. The RMO work is scheduled to be completed by end of 2013, and the French authorities plan to consult the different stakeholders, including environmental organizations and others, on its outcome. The NASF will continue to be an important technical, scientific and policy resource in the collaboration. House Bill Would Boost Federal Authority Over Workplace Safety A day after a deadly explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant, the Government Accountability Office issued a report finding that some states have failed with their occupational safety and health programs to meet minimum workplace-safety inspection goals, in part because of state budget cuts and reduced staffing. The report prompted lawmakers to introduce a bill giving federal OSHA more authority over state plans, while strengthening fines and authorizing felony prosecutions against employers who knowingly commit OSHA violations that result in death.
