Jotun to Remove Lead Chromates from Coatings Jotun plans to phase out lead chromates from all its paint and coatings formulations worldwide in 2014, substituting safer, highperforming alternatives. This move will put the company in compliance with European REACH regulations and will set it at the forefront when lead chromates are phased out in other markets, Jotun says. The lead chromate phaseout is consistent with the Jotun GreenSteps environmental initiative, which the company launched in 2011 to improve its environmental performance over a range of areas such as hazardous materials, carbon footprint, reducing VOC emissions, energy consumption and waste. U.K. Paint Maker Partners with Motorsports Firm U.K. paint manufacturer HMG Paints has become a technical partner of Prodrive Motorsport and will supply paints and coatings for Prodrive's Aston Martin Racing and MINI World Rally teams. Prodrive's race and rally cars require paint on a variety of surface types, including carbon fiber composite, aluminum, steel and plastics. The companies will work together to match sponsor colors, and to minimize paint and coating usage for weight savings. HMG and Prodrive also plan to collaborate on a number of other coating projects, including using unique pigments to produce more vibrant colors and developing new heat management coatings. HMG says the two companies also are developing a lotus-effect treatment that will reduce the amount of mud and dirt that clings to a car during a race. BASF Sponsors Vocational Training Centers BASF is sponsoring the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), a collision repair training program in Mesa, Ariz., that was created by Leading Edge Auto Refinishes, BASF's ColorSource distributor in Arizona, and Dr. Sally Downey, EVIT superintendent. Working closely with Leading Edge, EVIT and other industry manufacturers, BASF has helped renovate two collision shops to create a national training facility. The first building is designed for high school students who are interested in a career in collision and automotive technology, while the second shop is dedicated to the collision industry and will be used to provide advanced training for professionals.
