become a member at nasf.org Association Launches 2013 Bright Design Challenge The NASF will launch its 2013 Bright Design Challenge with the College of Creative Studies on January 16 in Detroit, Mich. This creative program is produced as part of the organizations Surface Technology Initiative to proactively promote the surface finishing industry. The intense 12-week competition will require students to work within strict guidelines and depict the best use of industrial surface finishes for recreational manufacturing company Polaris. Students are initially introduced to a brief overview of the surface finishing industry then invited to think beyond traditional design theory to showcase next-generation creative and engineering solutions. The students will be required to incorporate various types of finishing solutions that will reduce wear, and enhance a products corrosion resistance and appearance, while extending its useful life. At the conclusion of the program, scholarships will be applied directly to the winning students tuition. This past fall, thanks to the coordinated efforts of NASF West Coast chapters, a similar program was conducted with the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. These students are creating remarkable new designs to elevate and benefit the industry, says Tony Revier, NASF board president. Our association is proud to lead this program as part of our Surface Technology Initiative to promote the industrys contribution to society and our commitment to advancing a sustainable future for surface finishing in North America. For additional information on this program, visit nasfbright design.com. Wallace Sellers This review article was originally printed in Plating & Surface Finishing, 71 (6), 64-70 (1984) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the American Electroplaters Society. In it, W. Wallace Sellers, long-associated with the International Nickel Co. in many capacities from research to marketing, provides a fascinating account of the history of nickel plating. The story begins with the early days of nickel deposition which culminated in the discovery of the classic Watts bath. It continues with the important developments of top coats applied to the basic nickel layer, including chromium, semi-bright nickel and multilayer nickel for decorative applications. Paralleling our other paper in this months NASF Report, Sellers covers thicker engineering deposits, both via conventional electroplating and electroless plating, as well as the electroforming of entire articles. An extensive bibliography is provided for those wishing to do their own in-depth studies. The full paper can be accessed at short. pfonline.com/NASF13Jan2. n Aluminum Finishing Optional Exam June 10-11 June 13 Rosemont, IL (SUR/FIN 2013) Web-Based Courses Just the Basics on Electroplating Six 2-Hour Sessions February 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 Airline & Aerospace Finishing - Part 1 Eight 2-Hour Sessions March 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 Corrosion & Salt Spray Eight 2-Hour Sessions May 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 Register for all events at NASF.org. pfonline.com 11
